چکیده

The problem we want to handle in this p a p e r is vagueness. A notion of space, which we basically have, plays an important part in the faculty of thinking and speech. In this paper, we concentrate on a particular class of spatial descriptions, namely descriptions about positional relations on a two-dimensional space. A theoretical device we present in this paper is called the potential model The potential model provides a means for accumulating from fragmentary information. It is possible to derive maximally plausible interpretation from a chunk of information accumulated in the model. When new information is given, the potential model is modefied so that that new information is taken into account. As a result, the interpretations with maximal plausibility may change. A program called SPRINT(SPatial Relation INTerpreter) reflecting our theory is in the way of construction.

Monte Carlo Simulation for Plausible Interpretation of Natural-Language Spatial Descriptions

This system generates plausible threedimensional visualizations of basic English descriptions of a zoo environment (mainly animals and plants) by means of a Monte Carlo simulation. It combines a semantic network and an inheritance-based knowledge base as representations for explicit and implicit spatial information, respectively. Its linguistically motivated aspects address underspecification, ...

From Descriptions to Depictions: A Conceptual Framework

People use verbal descriptions and graphical depictions to communicate spatial information, thus externalizing their spatial mental representations. In many situations, such as in emergency response, the ability to translate the content of verbal descriptions into a conflict-free sketch map could greatly assist with the interpretation of the message. In this paper, we present an outline of a se...

Locating Sets: Spatial Semantics of Indefinites and Collective Descriptions

This paper addresses systematic variations in the interpretation of indefinites and plurals when appearing within prepositional phrases and other spatial expressions. We show that these variations are explained when spatial processes in semantics locate the sets associated with properties and other setbased denotations of nominals. Starting with spatial indefinites we consider contrasts like th...

Multilevel Integration of Vision and Speech Understanding Using Bayesian Networks

The interaction of image and speech processing is a crucial property of multimedia systems. Classical systems using inferences on pure qualitative high level descriptions miss a lot of information when concerned with erroneous, vague, or incomplete data. We propose a new architecture that integrates various levels of processing by using multiple representations of the visually observed scene. T...

Combining a logical and an analogical framework for route generation and description

Route generation is an ideal subject for studying the interactions of spatial and temporal reasoning in a practical setting. Starting from a cognitive study of pedestrian route descriptions in urban environments generated by human subjects, we identified the main requirements for a knowledgebased-system that would generate and describe routes in a cognitively plausible way. In this paper we pre...
